100% Natural DIY Baking Soda Shampoo and Honey Conditioner

The most annoying thing about having blonde hair? Maintaining the tone. I’ve tried so many combinations of expensive shampoos, glazes, treatments, sprays in an attempt to keep a clear, cool tone.

My hair – happy and healthy on baking soda, apple cider vinegar and honey!

One of our wonderful clients (thank you, Grace Pierson!) shared a tip for a “poo-free” shampoo (shampoo minus the icky chemicals) of just baking soda and water! Naturally, being the total product-junkie I am…I had to try it immediately.  My hair was recently a bit overly processed and in need of moisture, so a gentle method of cleansing my hair had to help, right?

It felt weird – dumping a mixture that was mostly water on my head and scrubbing with no reward of lather.

I decided to rinse with apple cider vinegar before applying honey as a conditioner. The honey doesn’t leave a slick feeling on the hair, which left we wondering if my hair was going to feel like sun-baked hay after it dried.

The verdict? I am a believer! So soft, so shiny… and, instantly smoother. This routine cleansed gently, but effectively enough to remove any product build-up that could dull my bright blonde hair. Enjoy the recipes and tips below, and let me know how it worked for you!

Baking Soda Shampoo

  • 1 cup filtered or distilled water
  • 1 tbs. baking soda

Tips:

  • Make a large batch and store in an old shampoo bottle.
  • You can adjust the ratio. For course hair, you can try making a paste by using just a little water.
  • Massage your hair and scalp for at least 30 seconds, and rinse very thoroughly.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Vinegar helps restore your hair’s pH while rinsing away product build-up on your hair. Vinegar adds amazing shine, too! Rinse the baking soda out of your hair, apply the apple cider vinegar rinse and work through hair from root to tip. Rinse well. Source: How It All Vegan

  • 1 cup filtered or distilled water
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar

Honey Conditioner

Honey is a natural humectant and oh-so-good for your hair and scalp. Work a handful of honey through your hair and massage into scalp. Rinse thoroughly. Because honey is water soluble, you’ll find this rinses easily.
